Natural Health: Whiten Teeth with Oil Pulling

You might recall from this time last year, my month without shampoo. I am always interested in different natural health remedies and practices but don't try them out as often as I should! Apparently April is the time of  year when I am motivated to do so.

So what have I been trying lately? Oil Pulling.

This is an ancient Ayurvedic practice in which you swish oil in your mouth for 20 minutes and then spit it out, rinse, and clean your mouth out well. I have been using coconut oil because the taste is divine and I don't mind having it in my mouth for 20 minutes, but I have also heard about people using sesame oil and olive oil!

What's the point, you ask? The theory is, when doing this: the oil pulls the toxins from your mouth, teeth, and gums to promote better oral and overall health. We carry a lot of bacteria (good and bad) in our mouths and it is a prime way of germs to enter our systems, so why not nip it in the bud, right?

Remember: never swallow the oil, since it is filled with all of the toxins you just removed from your mouth! And when you spit it out, spit it in the garbage because oil can harden in your drains and cause some issues! Then brush your teeth really well when you finish!

There are a long list of benefits, although like with most herbal remedies, they are up for debate. I myself have noticed a few improvements in the short time I have been trying it though! My teeth have never felt cleaner, no plaque build up here, thank you very much! It has also made my teeth appear whiter and brighter {those results showed up within 1 week}. Personally, I suffer from TMJ and jaw pain quite often and this technique has helped to relieve some of that as well. I think it is due to the gentle movement necessary to swish the oil around.

Other benefits include healthier gums, prevention of bad breath, increased energy, better concentration, clearer sinuses, alleviated allergies, more restful sleep, and an improved lymphatic system!

So, have you heard about this or any other new natural health trends? Surprisingly I am quite a fan of this one! Share your new practices with me!

Wishing you a lovely little day.

  1. I've been hearing so much about this lately! Are you doing it in place of brushing your teeth?

  2. I actually just recently tried oil pulling as well! I was seeing it everywhere and I'm super paranoid about my teeth and gums so I thought I'd give it a shot. I did it for a few days last week and was expecting it to be LIFE CHANGING, but I was kind of underwhelmed by the results. I didn't really notice any difference. Maybe I was just being too impatient, though. Gotta make more of an effort to continue/try again that this week!
